Effectively managing your company’s social media is not only time intensive, but now requires a new level of strategy in order to warrant engagement. With Facebook’s early 2018 commitment to prioritize posts from family and friends over public content, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get even good content noticed.
While most people are familiar with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), it’s less obvious how we can maximize our reach via social media.
Social Media Optimization (SMO) is using social media as a catalyst to grow your company’s online presence. It means not only existing on social networks, but strategically creating content and maximizing social media to strengthen your brand and connect with your target audience.
Here are three ways you can optimize your presence today:
1. Optimize your profiles. Make sure your photos are correctly sized to meet your network’s dimensions, verify your usernames and vanity URLS for consistency, and include keywords in your bios.
2. Optimize your strategy. Focus on the social networks that make sense for your company and do some research: When is your audience engaging most? With what types of content are they engaging?
3. Create a strategic mix of content that goes beyond promoting yourself or what you do. Use a mix of original and curated content, and use images, hashtags and emojis when applicable. Then track, analyze, and improve your efforts continuously.
