We recently watched the moving tribute to Fred Rogers on PBS entitled “Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like.” Not only is it a fitting tribute, but his impact on generations of children is unmatched. So what can we, as marketers, learn from him?
We recognize the dignity and potential of all children and the powerful impact adults have in their lives.
Our takeaway: Respect your brand and those to whom you are speaking. It can have a powerful impact if you approach your marketing from a respectful perspective.
2. THE DEEP & SIMPLE
Whether you are a child or an adult, substance and authenticity still have a place in this world.
Our takeaway: Always value and promote substance and authenticity, whether in life or in business. Do we really need to say any more?
We know that understanding and compassion are fundamental to children’s healthy social and emotional development.
Our takeaway: Approach your brand from your consumer’s perspective and never lose sight of that. We often get mired in preaching the features of what we offer, without stating the benefits. Develop your brand.
Fred never shied away from honest transparency when it came to tough issues and the feelings of children. On his show, he featured discussions about our differences, death, divorce, and many questions children have that we adults would not discuss. And, he did it masterfully.
We have a similar perspective when marketing our clients’ businesses. Understand the feelings of your audience and always consider how you share the message.
